Men’s Divorce, sponsor Cordell & Cordell and sister site DadsDivorce.com have teamed up to present a series of weekly recap videos to keep you informed on the latest news and top stories.
This week, Cordell & Cordell posted an interview of Principal Partner Joe Cordell, who spoke with Money Radio’s “Business for Breakfast” about the details of asset division.
Though a variety of factors will go into determining property division based on the individual circumstances of each marriage, Joe tells his clients to assume a 50/50 split of assets acquired during the marriage at the onset of a divorce. However, this amount can vary by as much as 20 percent or more depending on the specific facts of the case.
Dad’s Divorce featured an interview with journalist and blogger Kimberly Seals Allers, who recently wrote a piece for the New York Times explaining her decision to forgive $38,000 in child support arrears owed by her ex husband.
Though she faced some criticism for the decision, Allers explained that it was in the best interests of her family. She realized that her husband was not unwilling to repay the balance, but was simply unable to, and it was detrimentally impacting his relationship with their children.
Men’s Divorce published a guest article from guyvorce.com editor and blogger Sara Gabriella, which explained why you and your spouse are unable to share the same attorney during a divorce.
Many couples who are going through a non-contentious divorce often look for ways to reduce expense, and many consider the idea of sharing an attorney to cut costs. However, this would create a conflict of interests for an attorney, which is why Bar Associations have deemed this practice unethical.
